...and,
unfortunately, the mind and the brain are often the most neglected
parts of ourselves. We schedule appointments with the physician
and the dentist on a regular basis, but we lower our voices
if we even mention that we are seeing a mental health professional.
I often listen to people saying "and why would I go to a psychologist?,
I am not crazy." The same way people not only go to the doctor
when they are ill, but to maintain their health, many individuals
consult a mental health professional to maintain their mind
in good shape. After all, well know very well how difficult
it can be to juggle so many roles these days.
"Oh,
but I don't want to lay down on a couch and just talk to the
air." Psychotherapy and counseling, the way I practice them,
is an interactive
experience. You may consider me your coach in the mental health
area, and I will guide you to reach the goals that we decide
to work on. For some people, these can be accomplished in
just a few visits. For others, who have experienced more traumatic
events, or who suffer from more debilitating mental conditions,
therapy will take longer. The important thing is that we all
have different needs, and we do not need to be turned away
by the misconception that a therapist's office is a place
where once you go in, it will take you years to get out.
During my years in practice, I have helped people with a myriad
of presenting issues, from fear of flying in airplanes, to
chronic procrastination, to dealing with chronic illnesses
(such as heart problems, HIV and Lupus), and dealing with
extended family relationships. We are all unique, and all
of our problems are different. Sometimes we need a little
help to deal with situations at work that make our life miserable,
and other times, we need more help with coping with the loss
of a marriage, a child or a loved one. There is help. Do not
hesitate to look for it.
You
will be glad you did.
